Canvas Transfer: How to Turn a Print, Poster or Photo Into a Painting-Style Canvas

What Is Canvas Transfer?

A canvas transfer is the process of transferring an image from a printed or photographic image or media onto a canvas surface. The customer supplies their own media, and the finished product is a high quality canvas with a tactile appeal that can be framed and displayed.

It’s different from ordering a new canvas print. With a canvas transfer, the actual ink layer from your original is moved onto the canvas, rather than a digital file being printed directly onto it.

How the Canvas Transfer Process Works

Here’s what happens to your piece, step by step:

  1. Laminating the print. The print is coated with a UV-protected laminate film, in a matte or luster finish, so the image holds up through the process and lasts afterward.
  2. Softening the paper. The laminated print is soaked to soften its paper backing.
  3. Removing the paper. The softened paper is carefully removed by hand, leaving only the thin ink layer on the laminate film.
  4. Applying to canvas. That ink layer is pressed onto 100% cotton canvas with heat and pressure, so the canvas texture carries into the image.
  5. Stretching and framing. The canvas is stretched onto a wooden frame and finished with tape along the edges, ready to hang.

Canvas Transfer vs. Giclee Printing

Both end up on a canvas, but the ways of their realization are different. Giclee printing is a process of transferring a digital image onto canvas through a printer. The canvas transfer allows you to transfer your own image or painting onto a canvas and gives the resulting piece the look of an original painting.

When Canvas Transfer Makes Sense

  • You only have the physical copy. An older photo or a vintage poster with no digital original is a good candidate.
  • You want a painterly look. The texture is part of the appeal.
  • You want a gift with character. A treasured photo or poster transferred to canvas feels more personal than a standard frame.

Because the process works with your original print, it’s worth talking to the team before you send anything in, especially if the piece is hard to replace. If you have a digital file instead, a standard canvas print from our shop or Order Prints page may be the better fit.

Finishing Touches

A transferred canvas arrives stretched on a wooden frame and ready to hang. If you’d like a more polished look, you can pair it with custom framing, or ask about canvas stretching for other pieces.
